General information on treating and preventing

Chronic Respiratory Disease (CRD) in poultry / Pigeons,  associated with mycoplasma and coliform infections.

Chronic Respiratory Disease (CRD) is a common respiratory condition in poultry, and it can be caused by various pathogens, including Mycoplasma and coliform bacteria. Here are some general guidelines for treatment and prevention:

  • Isolation and Quarantine: When you identify sick birds, isolate them from the rest of the flock to prevent the spread of the disease. Quarantine any new birds before introducing them to your existing flock to prevent the introduction of pathogens.

  • Antibiotics: Antibiotics are often used to treat bacterial infections associated with CRD. Consult with a veterinarian to determine the most appropriate antibiotic and dosage for your birds. Common antibiotics used in poultry include tetracyclines, macrolides, and fluoroquinolones.

  • Water-Soluble Antibiotics: In many cases, antibiotics are administered through the birds' drinking water. Water-soluble antibiotics are convenient for treating an entire flock. Follow the veterinarian's instructions carefully for proper dosing and duration of treatment.

  • Ventilation and Environment: Ensure proper ventilation in your poultry house to reduce the buildup of ammonia and other harmful gases. Maintaining a clean and dry environment can also help reduce stress on the birds and prevent the spread of disease.

  • Biosecurity: Implement strict biosecurity measures to prevent the introduction of pathogens to your flock. This includes controlling visitor access, disinfecting equipment, and using dedicated clothing and footwear when handling the birds.

  • Vaccination: Depending on the specific pathogens involved, vaccination programs may be available to prevent CRD. Consult with your veterinarian to determine if vaccination is appropriate for your flock.

  • Nutrition: Ensure that your birds receive a balanced and nutritious diet. Proper nutrition helps support their immune system and overall health.

  • Stress Reduction: Minimize stress factors such as overcrowding, temperature fluctuations, and transportation. Stress can weaken the birds' immune system and make them more susceptible to disease.

  • Regular Monitoring: Continuously monitor your flock for signs of disease and consult with a veterinarian if you notice any issues. Early detection and intervention are crucial for successful treatment.

It's essential to work closely with a poultry veterinarian to develop a comprehensive disease management plan tailored to your specific situation. They can provide guidance on diagnosis, treatment, and prevention strategies to help you maintain a healthy flock. Additionally, be aware of any regulations and guidelines related to antibiotic use in poultry farming, as these may vary by region

Dosage and administration

For use in drinking water. The recommended dosage rates are:

Poultry

16.65 mg lincomycin and 33.35 mg spectinomycin/kg bw/day, for 7 days. This amounts to 75 mg powder/kg bw/day for 7 days.

Treatment should be initiated as soon as first clinical signs occur.

For the preparation of drinking water, the incorporation rate of the veterinary medicinal product in water will depend on the bodyweight of the animals and their actual daily intake of water.

To ensure a correct dosage and avoid underdosing, mean bodyweights in the group of animals and daily water consumption should be determined as accurately as possible.

The medicated drinking water should be the sole source of drinking water for the treatment duration. Any medicated water which is not consumed within 24 hours should be discarded.

In case of disease accompanied with significant decrease in water intake, parenteral treatment may have to be initiated.

Use the following indications as a basis for the precise calculation of incorporation rate of the veterinary medicinal product in drinking water.
