Salmonella serotypes group B and D of S. typhimurium and colonization of internal organs with the bacterium

Oral / Tracheal Swab & Faeces Sample (3 day turn around result)

B & D group S. typhimurium : causes the most diseases in birds and must be detected correctly.) Other Salmonella groupings may not cause any issue but may test positive for Salmonella.

Salmonella /paratyphoid in Pigeons/Poultry: is a serious disease, and it’s important to note that the correct professional information is important to acquire. With the correct diagnostic report specific to pigeon health which can indeed affect Pigeons /Poultry and cause various symptoms and outcomes as described. Here's a breakdown of the information.

True Carrier:

Pigeons infected with Salmonella may appear healthy but can shed the bacteria in their droppings, potentially infecting other birds. The symptoms in these carriers are typically mild or chronic loose droppings.

Young Bird Mortality.

Young pigeons infected with Salmonella, either through the egg or early in life, may experience acute watery diarrhoea and could die due to their underdeveloped immune systems.

Contaminated eggs:

If the sire / dam are carriers of Salmonella or E. coli, there's a risk of contaminating the eggs by infecting the embryo which can cause dead in egg syndrome.

Relating to Salmonella/ Paratyphoid:

When Salmonella leaves the gut and enters the bloodstream, it can multiply and spread to other parts of the body, such as the joints or brain.

Leg and wing joint.

When the Salmonella bacteria attacks the cartilage, it will cause wing drop , and limping which will affect the birds ability to fly.

Nerve Salmonella / Paratyphoid:

Salmonella in the bloodstream can lead to symptoms resembling septicaemia, including lack of balance, mis-pecking food, and head twisting. These symptoms can be confused with paramyxovirus (PMV) infection.

Disease prevention against Salmonella / Paratyphoid.

Prevention involves identifying and eliminating the sources of infection, such as feral pigeons and rodents. Vaccinate against Salmonella / Paratyphoid by using the Salgen Salmonella/ Paratyphoid vaccine so the birds can build the antibodies needed to fight the disease. Prevention is the best cure by vaccinating.

Regular cleaning of the loft using disinfectants.
